VERTIGO

Vertigo is 1). an Alfred Hitchcock movie or 2). “a sensation of whirling and loss of balance, associated particularly with looking down from a great height, or caused by disease affecting the inner ear…”

I’ve experienced this a few times and it’s kind of alarming to feel like you are on a storm-tossed ship when you are just sitting up in bed. What’s wrong? I suppose lots of things could be wrong but I want to tell you what was wrong in my case and in the case of millions.

According to the Mayo Clinc,  BPPV, or “benign paroxysmal positional vertigo causes brief episodes of mild to intense dizziness. BPPV is usually triggered by specific changes in the position of your head. This might occur when you tip your head up or down, when you lie down, or when you turn over or sit up in bed.

Although benign paroxysmal positional vertigo can be a bothersome problem, it’s rarely serious except when it increases the chance of falls. You can receive effective treatment for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo during a doctor’s office visit.”

The cure is simple, non-intrusive and can be Do It Yourself. It’s called the Epley maneuver and involves taking certain positions in sequence. BBPV is caused by tiny particles in your inner ear floating about and stimulating nerve endings. These particles do not drain normally, perhaps because of a history of ear infections. I call the condition RIYH, or Rocks In Your Head. So you drain them manually by using the Epley manuever.

I once went to the ER because the room was spinning and vertigo could be a symptom of stroke. Nope, no such thing, so they gave me a prescription for vertigo medicine, which did nothing. I had to research it myself. I studied the Epley maneuver online, followed the instructions and voila! Cured. Until about six weeks passed and I grew more rocks in my head and had to do it again. But it works every time.

I’ve told other vertigo sufferers about it, who did nothing about it but whine about dizzy spells. Do some folks like to be sick! Why? Attention? We want a magic pill to fix everything? Stop that, you could fall and hurt yourself. If you have it bad, I’d recommend having a chiropractor or physical therapist do it the first time or two. Some people become nauseated when their rocks shift around.

Here are a couple of videos that may help. But please don’t do nothing. You could fall or even worse, start spinning while driving your car. Stay safe and have a great week.
