Some folks go to great lengths to appear unique, but they may as well save the energy, because we are unique already. That’s why our DNA and fingerprints can identify us. Shoot, even each of our fingerprints is unique from the rest of them. There never has been and never will be, another person exactly like you.
I teach at the Suwannee River Studio and last class I got a bit philosophical and blamed it on the Catalpa tree. It grows on the corner and has heart shaped leaves. Every leaf is a Catalpa leaf, as every person is a human. But look closer at leaves or persons and you see that each one is unique. I collected leaves that were colorful, bug-gnawed, virus-spotted and stressed in various ways. We too, are stressed in various ways. I made clay models of the stressed leaves and each student made an Overcomer necklace from their leaf, to remind them that troubles come to every living thing, as Jesus promised, “In this world you will have troubles, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
Not only was each leaf unique, but each was beautiful for having overcome it’s troubles.
