Do you believe in aliens? Of course you do, because “alien” just means different. But it has come to mean beings from outer space who have visited earth for various reasons, ranging from stopping nuclear war, as astronaut Edgar Mitchell says, to abducting people from their beds and poking painfully into their bodies.
Supposedly those in the know keep this information from us because if we knew we would panic and the whole world would descend into chaos. I do not know why-I may be missing something here. We would panic because we would suddenly realize there are smarter beings than ourselves? That would be so shocking? Or more powerful beings who might do what we have done to each other? Invade, loot and enslave? But then maybe they are nice and want to help us-maybe theirs is a civilizing mission, like the excuse we used for imperial conquests around the world?
Either way, the fear seems to be that they are like us. Someone suggested that aliens would destroy religion. Again, I may be missing something. Religions have always said beings from outside outside dimensions visit earth-they call them angels and demons.” Oh, but that’s BS!” my atheist friends shout. That is BS, but ETs are not? Because? Because…science?
After all, Mitchell is an educated man, an astronaut, he walked on the moon. What does he say, exactly?

C’mon, is this solid? No. And then he makes an Olympic jump to this conclusion: it is “clear the ETs had been attempting to keep us from going to war and help create peace on Earth.” This is sloppy reasoning. And if the ET’s goal has been to stop war, they have been doing a shite job.
“Oh, Je’, you just don’t want to believe in aliens.” Not so, I think it probable that there are other forms of life in the universe, since life is everywhere present in some form-but could we detect this life with our limited senses? Maybe, now and then-who knows? These glimpses may be what people call angels and demons, which are both good and bad from our perspective. And ours is the only perspective we have.
What would your reaction be if aliens just revealed themselves-tada? Would you panic? I would think, “How extremely interesting! Let’s find out about them.” But I used to teach Horticulture and often thought the same about new insect species. “But they might kill us!” Like the most dangerous animal world? The mosquito-which kills one million people a year (and we don’t panic.)
We’ve barely scratched the surface of understanding our own world, and let’s be honest-we have barely understood our own selves.
