Science, Knowing and Missing the Big Picture

Do you like science? I do. Observing and theorizing and moving on to the next horizon-it’s definitely one of the “angels of our better (human) nature.” Of course, angels have been known to fall now and then, and so have humans, or at least this human has. A little humility is called for. We don’t know everything. Take this discovery about the orbits of Earth and Venus. Look! If forms a pattern. I theorize that planets orbit in predictable pointy patterns. I have proof.

Then I step back some more to get a bigger picture and discard my Pointy Orbit theory. Planets orbit in pointy-curvy ways. I am awarded a Nobel Prize for the Pointy-Curvy Orbit Theory.

Then I add Time into the equation and step back a bit more and NOW I know everything: planets orbit in this beautiful orderly pattern over time. I call it the Flower Orbit Theory-the Pointy Orbit Theory was clearly inadequate (but many will cling to it for decades because it wasn’t exactly wrong and besides, there’s proof.)

Do I NOW know everything? Wait, other planets form different patterns.

Lots of Patterns! All beautiful, all different.

And I perceive in 3 dimensions and those dang quantum guys say there are at least 11 (last I heard.) What do planets do in dimensions 5-11 ? Not a freakin’ clue, nor is there any way that I can even imagine, limited as I am by 3 dimensions (length, width, height-or 4 if you throw in Time,) Conclusion: We can learn things and that’s good. We can not learn everything and therefore a little humility is in order; a little humility mixed with a great deal of wonder seems appropriate.

After all, we are part of all this and it’s pretty amazing.
