The River of Life Flows On…

How is your week going? Good, I hope.

My new laptop is here-yay! Full of bloatware-boo. What is bloatware? A bazillion icons for special offers that stubbornly appears at startup on new computers. What the…? I just want to get to work.

Mica: Hey, why aren’t using your new computer?

Me: I’ve been trying to get rid of the bloatware and I’m mad.

Mica: That’s how new computers are, mom. Adapt or die, as you always say.

Me: (censored) I feel like I’ve been taken hostage and paraded past miles of billboards. In handcuffs.

Mica: I’ll see what I can do, calm down. My, that was a short honeymoon.

Me: What do you mean?

Mica: When you picked it up, you were petting the box whispering, “My Precious.”

Me: I was joking. (Wasn’t I?)

The river of life rolls on and I think I’ve de-bloated it. Speaking of the river of life, here’s a poem by Langston Hughes and a painting by me. Think about it, we were in our ancestor’s loins as they followed the rivers long ago, stopping at the Nile, the Euphrates and the Indus to establish “civilizations” (whatever they are.)

The Negro Speaks of Rivers (his title)

BY LANGSTON HUGHES

I’ve known rivers:

I’ve known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.

I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.

I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.

I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans, and I’ve seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset.

I’ve known rivers:

Ancient, dusky rivers.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
