I’m in the midst of writing a book on the history of religious ideas and ran into this quote from a Taoist teacher.
We westerners want to KNOW stuff and if we don’t know, we seem to get very panicky. Not so toward the east, and for some reason they make me smile; probably because I don’t know either.
“Long ago, I Chuang Chou, dreamed that I was a butterfly, a butterfly on the wing and I was happy and I did not know that was Chou. Suddenly I waked and I was myself, the real Chou. And I do not if it was Chou dreaming he was a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming it was Chou.”
