In the Garden: Sun and Flower

You probably know that you are not supposed to take photos with the camera aimed directly at the sun. This morning I reminded myself of that rule as I took a photo with the camera aimed directly at the sun.

In fact I reached up overhead to take it and snapped wildly. I didn’t have much hope for the outcome. But then I really liked it. Artists call this a happy accident-or at least they make the artist happy.

As a photo of a sunflower, it is, in one way, very bad. But as a picture of the sun and flower…

Contrast helps, light and dark, “clashing” colors- It helps that the sunflower is orange and background is a big purple Crepe Myrtle.

Without light and dark, without contrast, we could not see anything. There has to be some dark, at least on this three dimensional earth we inhabit. I thought of that two nights ago, when a big dog knocked me down. “Oh no, I hope I didn’t break my hand,” I thought, “Not my RIGHT hand! I use that one.” (I broke my left wrist a few years ago and said, “Well, at least its not my right wrist.”)

As it turned out, my right hand was not broken. I felt very grateful that my right hand was not broken. Then I wondered-do I have to lose something before I miss it? Do I have have a problem before I feel grateful?

If everything were perfect and whatever we wanted was just handed to us, would we be happy? Or would we be like the bratty kid on Willy Wonka, “I want the world, I want the whole world?”

My hand is working fine and so are all my other body parts. The bills are paid for the month and there is food in the fridge. I am thankful.

What are you thankful for today?
