Was Einstein an anti-Semite?

What a silly question! How could the poster child for Jewish intellectual superiority be anti-Semitic?

It is important to note that Einstein was intimately acquainted with fascism, having fled Nazi Germany in 1933. He knew what he was talking about, unlike Glenn Beck, who comedian Lewis Black says has “Nazi Tourettes.”

In 1948 Einstein wrote a letter to the New York Times warning the world that Israel was heading down the path to fascism. The rising “Freedom Party” led by Menachem Begin, whom Einstein called a terrorist, was “closely akin in its organization, methods, political philosophy and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties.”

According to the European Union, anti-Semitism includes “drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.” But wait-Einstein was not talking about “contemporary Israeli policy,” this was 1948 and Israel is now led by Bibi Netanyahu of the Likud party. Alas-the right-wing Freedom party “was the major political party in Israel from the 1940s until its formal merger into Likud in 1988.”

So yes, according to the EU law, Einstein was an anti-Semite. And since he was rumored to be pretty good at math, if he had ever questioned whether the figure of six million Jews killed in the Holocaust was off, if he suggested, for example, “No, it was three million,” he would also be a Holocaust Denier and subject to arrest and imprisonment in seventeen countries.

Imprisoning people for what they say is outrageous to Americans; we can say any dang fool thing we want. And we insist on the right to ask taboo questions. Furthermore, I think Einstein, who said, “Question everything,” would approve.

“If you would know who controls you see who you may not criticize.” Tacitus
