Beauty Passing Swiftly By…

Pastor Pat, who was a farmer before he was a preacher, once said, “If the world seems dark, if life stinks, if you feel like you are always going in circles-try taking your head out of your butt.”

I know it’s not the kind of sermon you might hear in a fancy church, but Pat was not a fancy man and neither were the farmers in the congregation. Yet his heart was bigger than his belly, and that is saying something.

The scripture for the day was, “whatsoever things are true, are honest, are just, are pure, are lovely, are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Phillipians 4:8)

Both of these statements seem to be saying that you can CHOOSE your thoughts, you can CHOOSE what you look at-so choose good and lovely things.

Yesterday morning, I noticed weeds blooming on the edge of my tiny garden plot. Nothing unusual about that, I’m not very good about weeding my garden. But the little blooms were pink-coral and they contrasted with the mellow yellow of the cucumber blossoms and the bluish cucumber leaves.

“Beautiful,” I thought. But worth painting? They were weed blooms, after all. Finally I couldn’t stand it and I made a painting of this one square foot piece of nature. A few hours later all the blooms were gone, withered in the heat.

“Whatsoever things are lovely-think on these things”

and be alert

for beauty passes swiftly by.
