For All the Strong Women Out There!

On September 2, 2013, Diana Nyad, a 64 year-old American woman, swam 110 miles from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Since I had been reading about previous failures, mostly involving stinging jellyfish, I was excited for her. I was very close to being inspired to start working out. Not quite, but close.

A few months ago, while perusing foreign newspapers online (where all the best news is) I ran across another inspiring story. An Australian race horse had just won its 25th race out of 25 starts and was something of an Australian celebrity. Since I had trained horses in my youth, I was impressed. I looked at photos of Black Caviar and thought, “Yeah, beautiful strong legs, beautiful athletic body. I guess he will retire to high stud fees now.”

Then the article mentioned that Black Caviar was a SHE. Why had I assumed otherwise? Perhaps even I, who believe in strong women, have a lurking prejudice. To atone for my sin, I decided to paint a tribute to Black Caviar and to strong women everywhere.

Go girls. : )
