Thoughts on Art in the Land of Cotton

I’ve been doing studies of plants and today decided cotton was interesting, especially since I live in the Land of Cotton. The fields are still covered with “Georgia snow” in winter and are quite beautiful.

It was then I realized (again) the powerful influence our thoughts have on our perceptions: cotton-a beautiful, useful and interesting plant, and Georgia cotton, slavery and the bloody Civil War. Which cotton did I want to paint?

I couldn’t decide so I painted a benevolent, matronly, cuddly cotton and an aggressive, decrepit, violent one. I imagine the one you prefer depends on your personality and your own thoughts on the Land of Cotton. According to the song, “Old times there are not forgotten,” and maybe that’s a good thing.

Below: “Soft Cotton” and “Hard Cotton” pastel paintings, both 16 X 20.
